SITE REQUIREMENTS:

1. What browser should I use?

The best browser to support all of the site's streaming, real-time functionality is Internet Explorer. Please use Internet Explorer 4.0 or above (I.E. 6.0 recommended). If you use a Netscape browser, please use Netscape 6 or above.

Netscape Note: If you use Netscape, it is necessary to use version 6 or higher. When downloading Netscape 6, be sure to download the FULL version, which includes the Java support that is necessary to use B4Utrade. You may also download the custom version and check off the components of the browser that you would like to download, just be sure to include the Java Sun Runtime2 component. Do not download the recommended version, as it does not have the support that the site needs to run optimally.

2. Is your browser set to "accept cookies"?

Please make sure that your browser is set to “Accept Cookies”. For Directions on how to set your browser to accept cookies, please follow the appropriate instructions below:

  4. Click OK.

Netscape 6.x

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Click the Advanced category.

3. What is the memory requirement?

Because of the dynamic functionality and numerous java applets, your computer must have at least 64MB of RAM. Memory levels lower than 64MB will run, but may affect the load time and performance of the applets.

If you have any questions, need help, please call us at 1-800-660-3233 anytime.

Technical Questions:

1. I am logged in and using Internet Explorer, but the screen is gray where quotes should be appearing, what should I do?

Usually if you do not see quotes, and the screen is gray, it means that the java applets are not loading correctly. It may be necessary to download the Sun Java Plug-in if after the first check below, you still do not see quotes.

Instructions

  • Go to the Tools menu at the top of the browser.
  • Select Internet Options.
  • On the default General tab, click on the "Settings" button in the middle of the screen in the Temporary Internet Files Section.
  • At the top make sure that “Check for newer version of stored pages” is set to “Every visit to the page”.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK again.
  • Close all open Internet Explorer browser windows that you may have open.
  • Re-open the browser and log back in.

If you still are unable to see quotes, please follow the following instructions:

  • Go to http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp to go to the Sun Java website.
  • Click on the Free download in the upper right hand corner of the screen, on the “Get it Now button”.
  • A security window will come up and ask if you want to run and install java, click YES.
  • Once the download is complete, the installation wizard will appear.
  • Click through the wizard and accept the agreement, choose the typical/recommended installs and click “Next” until you are finished installing.

You should now be able to login and the java applets should load on your screen. If you still are unable to view quotes, please call 1-800-660-3233.

2. I can see quotes, but the streaming seems to be dragging, what can I do?

If you can see the quotes in your java applets, but the quotes seem to be dragging there may be a conflict in your virtual machines that are loaded on your system. To remove the conflict, do the following:

  • Go to your start menu and into the Control Panel.
  • There will be a Java Plugin icon (looks like a coffee cup with red steam).
  • Double-click on the Java Plugin icon.
  • Click on the “Browser” tab.
  • If Internet Explorer is checked, UNCHECK Internet Explorer and click Apply at the bottom.
  • Close the control panel and close any Internet Explorer browser windows you may have open.
  • Re-launch Internet Explorer and login.

If you are still experiencing noticeable latency, please call 1-800-660-3233.

3. I can see ticker symbols, but no quote data, what should I do?

If you are able to see ticker symbols, but no quote data, it could be one of two things. To make sure you are accessing the newest information, please check your browser settings, they should be set to the following:

  • Go to the Tools menu at the top of the browser.
  • Select Internet Options.
  • On the default General tab, click on the "Settings" button in the middle of the screen in the Temporary Internet Files Section.
  • At the top make sure that “Check for newer version of stored pages” is set to “Every visit to the page”.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK again.
  • Close all open Internet Explorer browser windows that you may have open.
  • Re-open the browser and log back in.

If you still are unable to see quotes it could be a firewall issue. If you have firewall software installed on your machine, you need to add B4Utrade as a permissioned website to pass through your firewall. In most firewall programs there is a place where you can add websites to your list of sites who are allowed through the firewall. Please add the following two web addresses to that list so that you may access the site in full:

4. I am unable to run more than 2 applets or the Options Super-Streamer won't work correctly, what should I do?

Because the application is entirely web-based and is not a software download onto your local machine, limitations can exist with the performance of java applets. However, by choosing one of the below solutions to the problem, you will be able to run multiple applets at once without performance lags.

Solution #1: Download the Sun Java VM (Recommended)

Download the latest version of the SUN JAVA virtual machine and use it as your default virtual machine. Virtual machines are necessary in order for the streaming functionality to work in java applets inside browser windows. Microsoft has a virtual machine built into Internet Explorer and it is typically the default virtual machine used. However, Java is Sun Microsystem's technology, thus by using Sun's virtual machine, you are provided with enhanced functionality and support for java applets. Upon completion of the download, you will notice that it takes a few more seconds for the applets to load for the first time, however once they are loaded, you will be able to run multiple applets at once with optimal performance.

To Download go to:

  • Go to http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp to go to the Sun Java website.
  • Click on the Free download in the upper right hand corner of the screen, on the "Get it Now" button.
  • A security window will come up and ask if you want to run and install java, click "YES".
  • Once the download is complete, the installation wizard will appear.
  • Click through the wizard and accept the agreement, choose the typical/recommended installs and click "Next" until you are finished installing.

Solution #2: Update your Microsoft registry

While this is a little more complicated, another option is to update your Microsoft registry, which will enable you to continue using the Microsoft VM as your default virtual machine. This is essentially adding the extra components that you need from the Sun Java plug-in. To download the file you need to update the registry please click on the following link:

Click to download.

Once the file is downloaded, copy the file to a .reg file. You may need a system administrator to help you with this.

5. I am an AOL user and am having problems accessing the site, what can I do?

AOL users can access B4Utrade.com by connecting to the Internet through AOL as usual, but then need to launch Internet Explorer (recommended) or Netscape separately to access the site. Minimize AOL once you have logged on and then either click on the browser icons on your desktop or access them in the Program menu located in the Start Menu.

6. I have Netscape, but I cannot access the java applets, how can I fix this?

The earlier versions of the Netscape Browser were not designed to support dynamic functionality, such as Java applets. To access the site, it is necessary to use version 6 or higher. When downloading Netscape 6, be sure to download the FULL version, which includes the Java support that is necessary to use B4Utrade. You may also download the custom version and check off the components of the browser that you would like to download, just be sure to include the Java Sun Runtime2 component. Do not download the recommended version as it does not have the support that B4Utrade needs to run optimally.

7. How much memory does my computer need?

We recommend that you at least have 64 MB of RAM in order to best optimize B4Utrade.com. Because the site is so dynamic and java intensive, the more memory your system has, the better!

If you have less than 64MB of RAM, memory upgrades can be purchased at any computer store for generally about $40.

8. How do I check to see how much Memory my computer system has?

  1. Go to the Start Menu
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select System
  4. On the General Tab, it is listed at the bottom or the Performance Tab gives more detailed information about the memory on your system.

9. I have 64 MB of memory, but my system is still slow.Is there anything I can do to increase performance?

Many times systems can get bogged down, even if you have sufficient memory.Generally that is because of the automatic process that systems do, such as keeping track off every page you have visited on the web.

Here are few quick things you can do to clean your system of files that you don’t need, which pull on your memory. It is good practice to clean these files periodically. It will only enhance your system’s performance in all areas.

  1. Delete your Temporary Internet Files
  2. Delete your cookies

All of these items can be found the following way:

  1. Go to the Tools menu at the top of the browser
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. On the default General tab, in the middle of the screen in the Temporary Internet Files Section, Click on “Delete Cookies”
  4. Click Yes, you are sure you want to delete the files in the Temporary Internet Files folder
  5. Then click on the “Delete Files” button in the center, check the box the says “Delete all offline content”, then Click OK
  6. Close the browser, reopen it and start fresh.

It is also good to do regular diagnostic checks on your system. Things like compressing files and defragmenting your hard drives will also free up memory.

10. Do I need to Accept Cookies for the site to work properly?

YES! The site will not function properly if you do not have your browser set to accept cookies. Typically Internet Explorer and Netscape’s default setting are set to accept cookies.

Only the information that you provide, or the choices you make while visiting a Web site, can be stored in a cookie. For example, the site cannot determine your e-mail name unless you choose to type it. Allowing a Web site to create a cookie does not give that or any other site access to the rest of your computer, and only the site that created the cookie can read it.

11. How do I make sure my browser is set to accept cookies?

Internet Explorer 5.x

  1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click on the Internet Zone. (usually the default)
  4. To enable Cookies, click the Customize Level button. Scroll Down to “Cookies” and click enable.

Internet Explorer 6.x

  1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. There is a Lever on the left hand side, usually set in the middle on Medium. Slide lever all the way to the bottom to “Accept All Cookies”.
  4. Click OK.

Netscape 6.x

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Click the Advanced category.
  3. Click on Cookies.
  4. Select “Enable all cookies”.

Product Features:

1. How does Portfolio Tracker work?

The Real-Time Streaming Portfolio Tracker gives you the ability to view your portfolio the same way the pros do - with all the quotes updating live, and without ever having to refresh your screen. Simply identify an existing portfolio on the dropdown menu and view the stocks in that portfolio below. You can create up to 10 portfolios of 50 stocks each and either watch the expanded quotes or track your gains and losses, all streaming real-time.

Create/Modify Portfolio:

Allows you to either create a new portfolio or modify an existing portfolio. Simply add or delete the tickers as desired, keeping in mind that you can create up to 10 portfolios with up to 50 stocks in each. When done, click on 'Save Portfolio' and close the window. You will be able to easily access the newly saved portfolio (or one of the previously saved portfolios) using the drop down menu.

A) Real-time Gain Loss Tracking: Once you have saved the portfolio you can then enter in your own share and price values for the stocks that you own so that you can track your gains and losses real-time. Once you have saved the ticker symbols in your portfolio, an 'Edit' link will appear next to the ticker symbol(s). You may then click on the 'Edit' link to input the necessary price and share information needed in order to track your gains and losses. You may track your holdings in separate lots, displaying each block of shares purchased as a separate line in your portfolio. This option gives you the most detailed picture of your holdings and gains; if you are an active trader, you might choose this system. Or you may track all holdings of a security together as a single line item; if you choose to track your holdings this way, your portfolio will display the average purchase price for all your shares. This method lets you track a running total of current positions, rather than individual transactions; this option may work for you if you are a long-term investor, own mutual funds, or participate in a dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP), and want to see the "big picture" only. In either case, you may adjust your holdings manually, by typing your total number of shares, average purchase price, and purchase date into the correct row of the table.

B) Changing your holdings using B4Utrade's calculator: Click the 'Edit' link next to the symbol whose holdings you wish to adjust. The interface will step you through the transaction, allowing you to indicate the transaction type, number and price of shares, commission costs, and tracking preference (single line item or lots). The engine, acting as a “calculator”, will then automatically adjust your holdings accordingly, either recalculating your total holdings and average purchase price of the security, or adding a new line to show the new lot.

C) Changing your holdings manually: If you prefer to track holdings in separate lots, you may add a new lot by typing in the symbol, number of shares in the lot, average purchase price per share (including the commission), and purchase date. To reflect a sale, you may remove a lot by deleting the data you had previously entered. If you are tracking all holdings together, you'll need to adjust the total number of shares and average price for each symbol to reflect your latest transaction, whether purchase or sale.

D) Tracking Cash: Beneath the column of symbols in your portfolio is a “Cash to track” box; enter the cash amount you wish to track in this portfolio and click 'Save Portfolio'.

E) Making additional changes: If you want to make further changes to your portfolio settings, you may make those changes on this page before clicking the 'Save Portfolio' button, but please note that changes will not be saved to your portfolio until you click 'Save Portfolio'.

F) I already have 10 portfolios and want to create another: If this is the case then you must either delete or modify an existing portfolio.

2. How does the Wall of Stocks work?

Allows you to view real-time, up to 39 dynamically updated quotes the same way the pros do - without ever having to refresh your screen. Simply click on the “Add/Delete Tickers” link and enter the stock tickers of your choice. Each ticker will be displayed on the “wall” according to the position you specify on the grid. As many as 39 tickers (or a combination of market indices and tickers) can be entered in your wall of stocks.

Note: Some of the key market indices tickers are provided for your reference.

3. How does Stocks Up Close work?

Access detailed real-time stock information and research

Just Click and go!

    Here is what's available:
  1. Real-time Quote and news display in the data field.
  2. Select Interactive Charting to get historical and real-time Intra-day charting for that stock as well as market leaders and losers.
  3. Important company events such as earnings announcements, conference call, latest analyst comments and Stock Splits are posted.

Enter any stock or mutual fund and click Go, or click on the ticker in your portfolio. This will allow you to view, real-time, the stock you have selected.

4. How does the scrolling ticker and news applet work

Keep track of news stories on stocks that you cover without having to continuously check.

The Scrolling Ticker and News applet tracks quotes and news all in real-time, whether you are on the site, or working on another application. You can detach or “Float” the applet so that you can keep an eye on your quotes and news while you are working on something else. Just click the “Float” button to the right of the applet and move the window wherever you would like.

To control the quotes and news you want to watch, click on the “edit” link to the right of the applet. Insert up to 39 tickers to cover, separated by spaces in the box given.
